With Dorcas Cheng-Tozun
How exactly do you say thank you to someone whose work has made a large impact on the way you see yourself and your marriage? Apparently, if you’re me, not very well!
This week’s guest interview is with Dorcas Cheng-Tozun, who is an award-winning writer, a former columnist for Inc.com, and the author of Start, Love, Repeat: How to Stay in Love with Your Entrepreneur in a Crazy Start-up World.
It was this book that made me realize that supporting Ryan and his business does not have to mean sacrificing myself along the way. It was Dorcas who made me understand that I could (and should) set boundaries relating to money, time, and whatever else I struggle with. Boundaries, set in a healthy and mutually agreed-upon way, actually keep both the business and the marriage moving forward.
Her book is the model for how I approach the content for my podcast. It’s a mix of memoir, research, and interviews with experts and other spouses of entrepreneurs. She justifies my feelings while also holding me accountable for my actions. She provides real, actionable advice that’s helpful for any marriage, whether your husband owns his own business or not.
And so, at the beginning of the interview, I tried to thank her for writing Start, Love, Repeat. Let’s just say that I didn’t do very well. I stumbled along for a minute or so, and it’s a bit painful to listen to… so I edited out some of it. (HA! There are perks to being the host!)
We talk about self care, learning about yourself, and setting boundaries (of course!). My favorite part of our chat is when I ask her what her favorite thing is about being married to an entrepreneur. It’s a really good answer, and something that I have come to appreciate about my role as Mrs. Startup. So make sure you stick around to the end (but don’t fast forward)!
Here’s a little more about Dorcas: She was the first director of communications for leading global social enterprise d.light, and her work has appeared in The Wall Street Journal, Christianity Today, Image Journal, and dozens of other publications in the U.S., Asia, and Africa. A native of Silicon Valley, Dorcas has also lived in mainland China, Hong Kong, and Kenya with her entrepreneur husband and two young boys.
